The original of this superb mummy portrait from Fayum in Egypt, created in around 140 AD, is now in the Metropolitan Museum. Unfortunately we don’t know this man’s name, which means that posterity refers to him, rather unflatteringly, as the ‘man with a mole on his nose’.
