Although Felix, the family’s middle son, has never shown great interest in much beyond natural history, he does have a passionate interest in knights. To his parents’ amazement he has quite happily made his way through the Morte d’Arthur and Ivanhoe, and can give chapter and verse on the Knights of the Round Table, while simultaneously remaining completely impervious to all other forms of culture. In Felix’s room, up on the mantelpiece away from the clutter of shells, birds’ eggs and pinned butterflies, he keeps two cherished ornaments of jousting knights. This is the first: the Knight of the White Crescent. He and his adversary change from hero to villain depending on the day and Felix’s mood, but they remain frozen in their eternal battle.
