I know, I know: it’s the ultimate definition of kitsch, isn’t it? But Charles Burton Barber was very popular among his Victorian contemporaries, and this picture is destined to hang in the Day Nursery, where its tale of a little girl in disgrace is probably very fitting. It’s slightly too late for Quartermaine Hall, as it was painted in 1893, but I won’t tell if you don’t.

There’s another reason that we couldn’t resist this mini replica by Ellie de Lacy: when I was growing up, we had a print of this picture in our dining room, and so it now has a certain nostalgic charm for me.
