This novel by Charles Reade was first published in 1861 and tells the story of a young couple in 15th-century Europe. Inspired by stories about the childhood of Erasmus, it was extremely popular and was cited as a favourite book by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling, among others. Naturally it would also be a favourite of our family and I plan to have it sitting on Lizzie’s bedside table. Mariangela Gagliardi has, as usual, created a stunning little object with an absolutely gorgeous cover.
