Provenance: Purchased from the artisan’s stand at Miniatura at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on 19 March 2022.

Philatelists will be shaking their heads in despair at finding a sheet of Penny Red stamps in a house from around 1980. This iconic British stamp was actually in use between 1841 and 1879 and it is most unlikely that Charles or Elizabeth Quartermaine would still have a sheet of them tucked away in a drawer. But, as is so often the case, I saw them and couldn’t resist. I was a keen stamp collector when I was a child and still add the occasional foreign or interesting stamp to my albums nowadays, so I was tickled by the thought of having some Penny Reds in Quartermaine Hall.
