This is another work by the enigmatic Kay Lewis. I couldn’t resist its jaunty subject, with the soldier proudly holding his musket high as his horse prances under him. It’s presented against the Staffordshire-style fan of drapery that appears at the back of most of Kay’s works. Like the other sculpture I have from her, it seems to be made from a rubbery kind of resin: the fronds of greenery are particularly fragile. Equine subjects usually go to the Smoking Room, but in this case the patriotic or historical subject makes it more suited for the Library.

Interesting fact: the gold base is, in fact, an old painted button. I discovered this when it came loose and I had to repair it.
