Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist via eBay.

The original book probably dates from the 1880s or 1890s although I haven’t yet managed to track down the exact prototype. As it was published by Peter G Thompson in Cincinnati, Ohio, I think we might once again have to invoke the Quartermaines’ mysterious American aunt, whom I am inventing as I write to justify the presence of all these American books in our British nursery.
