When I bought this beautiful silver-handled cane, the ‘brand’ was given as ‘P. Shevchenko’. I am familiar with Sergei and Dmitry Shevchenko, the IGMA-accredited master Russian miniature silversmiths, by whom I have a wishlist as long as my arm (which for obvious reasons can’t be purchased at the time of writing). But I haven’t come across a ‘P’ Shevchenko. For now I’ve put ‘attributed’, as there is no firm evidence of the maker – much as I’d love to have a Shevchenko piece in our collection. If anyone has any further info, I’d be grateful. Regardless of who made it, this cane is a gorgeous little piece. The handle is elegantly curved to fit in the palm of the hand, and worked with decoration, and a tiny silver ferrule protects the bottom of the cane. The shaft is made from fine-grained wood. It will look splendid standing in a cane stand in the Entrance Hall.
