This is one of a set of ten solid books which we ordered from Mariangela Gagliardi at the same time, chosen primarily on their aesthetic qualities, as the titles on the spines are so tiny we couldn’t read them on the computer screen. It’s been rather fun finding out which volumes we’ve ended up with.

In this case, the spine suggests a fairly straightforward identification: ‘Petrarcha Aldus’. Presumably this is a copy of an edition by the great early Italian printer Aldus Manutius, publishing work by the (equally great) poet Francesco Petrarca. The binding is obviously considerably later.
