This is one of a set of ten solid books which we ordered from Mariangela Gagliardi at the same time, chosen primarily on their aesthetic qualities, as the titles on the spines are so tiny we couldn’t read them on the computer screen. It’s been rather fun finding out which volumes we’ve ended up with.
Here we have a copy of the Catholic liturgy for Holy Week, described on the spine as ‘Semaine Sainte’. I haven’t found the exact volume that Mariangela used as her source, but there are numerous very similar books online, which suggest that this is an 18th-century binding. I’m not sure why the Quartermaines would have this: is it just a general interest in religion, or does it (along with their Crucifixion and their Veronica’s Veil) suggest that they might have Catholic sympathies?
