This is one of a set of ten solid books which we ordered from Mariangela Gagliardi at the same time, chosen primarily on their aesthetic qualities, as the titles on the spines are so tiny we couldn’t read them on the computer screen. It’s been rather fun finding out which volumes we’ve ended up with.

Published in 1872, James T Fields’s book is a collection of memoirs covering some of the most celebrated authors of the age, including Hawthorne, Thackeray and Dickens. Fields himself was American, running one of the leading publishing houses in Boston, and he represented many of the major British authors in the American market: hence their friendships.
