Gerald Crawford is regularly named among the best creators of miniature furniture, but it’s proving quite hard to find out biographical details about him. I presume he’s American, as he had a long-running collaboration with the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, creating stunning miniature versions of their Early American furniture. The pinnacle of his work for them, according to one note I found online, was a fully working 1/12 scale spinet, offered by Winterthur in their 1990-91 catalogue for $8,000.
Sadly we are not in that kind of market just yet – and he is so highly regarded that his pieces are very expensive – but we have managed to make a start on our Crawford collection and hope to add a few more pieces as time goes by. As he retired from miniature-making in the early ’90s (where does one go after building a fully functioning miniature spinet, after all?), I suspect he may have died, but if anyone can provide further info of any kind, I’d be really interested to learn more.
