Paul Michael Briggs was born in Nottingham and originally trained as a furniture designer. He used his skills to make a range of miniatures, usually nautical in theme, from the early 1980s onwards. His work was often produced in a limited edition, the most spectacular of his creations being his miniature ships in bottles (a truly mind-boggling achievement!). The Kathleen Savage Browning (KSB) Collection in Kentucky even has a ship automaton, housed in a custom-built cabinet: the ship moves through the waves while a whale surfaces alongside it. Terrific stuff. We don’t yet have a miniature Briggs ship, but we do have a rather impressive taxidermy fish.
