This page includes items found in the grand entrance hall, around the main staircase and on the upper landing gallery. There will eventually be a selection of furniture, pictures or mirrors, and sculpture to enjoy, but (assuming that you’re an unexpected guest), there’s also the pleasant detritus of everyday family life. Picnic hampers are waiting for the next outing; a Bath chair waits for Grandmama’s next visit; and be careful not to trip over the odds and ends of games equipment that no one has got round to putting away.
You can turn left, into the Gallery, right, into the Dining Room, or head on up the stairs to the First Floor. Or, if you fancy having a nose around some less showy parts of the house, sneak to the back of the hall, through that baize door set beneath the stairs, and go down to the Basement to explore the servants’ quarters.
