Second Floor

If the First Floor offers a series of semi-public rooms, to which close friends and relatives are admitted, then the Second Floor closes off access even more. Here we find the private rooms of the adult (or near-adult) Quartermaines, as well as the Parlour – a place for informal family relaxation – and the state-of-the-art Bathroom. Charles and Elizabeth’s bedroom is full of Arts and Crafts decoration and nods to early Renaissance furniture and art, while Isabella’s room is full of the paraphernalia of a young woman about to marry. Felix’s room is part den, part shrine to natural history.

When you’re done here, climb up to the Third Floor to see the children’s quarters, including the Day and Night Nurseries, the Schoolroom, and the Governess’s Room.
