The bustle and industry of the Sewing Room is tucked away on the top floor of the house. Here a couple of maids with dressmaking experience work on repairing, updating and remodelling the family’s old clothes. In an age when fashion moves so quickly, it’s an excellent way of keeping up to date without breaking the bank: indeed, the maids are so accomplished that Elizabeth and Isabella are often the envy of their friends. Occasionally the seamstresses are tasked with something more challenging: to create Isabella’s wedding dress, for example, or to invent splendid outfits for the costume balls that Charles and Elizabeth occasionally attend.
